The Fable series bridged the gap between arcade-style games and hardcore role-playing games. Each game in the series had its own flaws, but overall, the games were very playable, contained good graphics, had easy and intuitive controls, and were not too difficult. They are a great introduction to RPG gaming, and most gamers can complete each entry without too much trouble.

This trilogy was one of the first to provide mundane options like crafting, buying houses, changing the look of the character, etc. While the plots are not the most complex, the games give enough variety and choices to make the games re-playable several times.

Tales of Vesperia is a stunning and sprawling high definition RPG that has a great storyline, some brilliant characters, and a pretty addictive battle system. I played the original Fallout games on PC back in the '90s and enjoyed the strategic elements and adventure that they provided. Fallout 3 took those elements to the next level by creating a game that combined first-person shooting, role-playing, strategy, and adventure.

The result was fantastic and remains one of my favorites. Fallout 3 is a truly vast game that gives you many choices that will change the game—with excellent graphics and a superb atmosphere it is one of the "must-have" RPG games. I first encountered the Elder Scrolls series in the late '90s on the PC.

It was probably the first RPG game that had a truly open world that allowed you to travel anywhere in the world whenever you wanted. There were many flaws in the game and much repetition, but it signaled a change in the way RPG games would be created and promised much. As the series progressed the games got better providing more complex quests, decent plots, and state of the art graphics—it became the flag-bearer for RPG genre and set the standard for what RPG games should be like.

Many modern RPG games contain many of the elements of the Elder Scrolls series but there are not many that can truly challenge them— Skyrim , a more recent Elder Scrolls game, was one of the most anticipated games of any genre. What sets the series aside is the attention to detail—swaying grass, cascading waterfalls, and views to die for makes the whole game an incredible experience.

The ability of the game to provide an atmosphere on several levels combining scenery, weather effects, and sound effects is simply stunning and makes this a very immersive series.

Is it perfect? The Witcher series is one of the most original. Set in a very atmospheric medieval world, the game reeks atmosphere and draws you into one of the best plots of any RPG series. The combat systems is unique and can be quite challenging. For many, the second game was too difficult, but overall the Witcher series is one of the most compelling RPG series of all—it may not have the best graphics or sound, but the overall game is excellent.

Please note that both of the Witcher games feature nudity. They are not suitable for children. With stunning graphics, a combat system that requires a strategy to be used, and sublime sound, it captures everything that is good about RPG games. The game was one of the best and compares favorably with my personal favorite Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Hopefully, Dragon Age 3 will rediscover this excellence.

Before you buy this game, you should be aware that it's not really aimed at hardened RPG gamers. Again, much like Diablo and some of the other isometric style action RPG titles, players can dive into this game with cooperative multiplayer. Warhammer: Vermintide 2 throws players into a fight of their life as they battle against Skaven.

This is a combat-focused game with an assortment of melee weapons and abilities. Meanwhile, players can pick from a few different characters that can be tweaked towards a certain playstyle or class. This was an MMO game that followed an agency that essentially acted as the last stand for the nation. Again, this is an MMO title that will require players to connect online to go through it. Overall, players are starting the game out in Washington D. Players can unlock new gear and weapons to use as their loadout while being able to freely explore the open city along with battling against the hostile forces that will appear throughout the map.

In this game, players are put into BC where players can pick between two characters, Kassandra and Alexios. Reluctantly, your family abides by their demands as they toss you aside of a cliff where you manage to survive. Washing up on the shore of a new world, our protagonist grows up to become a ruthless mercenary that eventually forces you to confront your old family once again.

Instead, you have a bigger world to explore, quests to uncover, and even the ability to roam the open sea on a boat to reach certain landmasses. Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights throws players into a dark atmospheric world where you play the role of a girl named Lily. Taking place within medieval times, the game opens up with a supernatural storm.

This storm has cursed a kingdom and turned all of the living into hostile creatures. Fortunately, Lily awakens safely at the kingdom cathedral only to discover the horrors that await outside.

Players will go through this Metroidvania platformer, battling against the hostile beasts and seeking out the source of this rain. This game is often described as Hollow Knight, just with less platforming involved. As a result, there was plenty of attention to their next big video game release which was Transistor. Within this game, players step into the role of Red, a lounge singer that had her voice stolen although in its place she wields a strong and large sword-like weapon called the Transistor.

This is quite the action RPG, where players can make upgrades to their character whether it be aimed towards delivering powerful attacks or defensive measures to keep Red a bit safer in a fight. Within the game, players find that humanity is nearing extinction thanks to a horrific war between two supernatural forces that both see humanity as either a resource or simply a target to cleansing from the world. Players are essentially tossed into this world to see just how they will survive or potentially shape this new reality for the human race.

Nier Replicant Ver 1. Nier might have gained some enormous worldwide attention with Nier: Automata. That game blew up and is constantly gaining new fans. Nier: Replicant was a prequel to Nier: Automata, and initially, it was only available in Japan. This year, we received an upgraded version of the game with Nier Replicant Ver 1. Tying it all together is a beautiful story that will keep you pursuing until you finally wrap up the campaign.

The Kingdom Hearts franchise was a huge hit when it first came out on the PlayStation 2. Overall, players were going through the various Disney IP worlds as they fought off hostile enemies that were bringing darkness to the universe.

Players once again stepped into the role of Sora as you battled heartless across a variety of Disney-owned worlds and characters. For instance, players would venture to the world featuring the Pirate of the Caribbean, Monsters, Inc. Meanwhile, the combat has remained the same with players freely roaming around and battling against enemies using their various Keyblades acquired along the way.

Fallout in general is a massively popular RPG franchise that has a strong following however, some would say that the best installment from the franchise is Fallout New Vegas. Here players are not going through the typical trope of a Fallout game in which you start in Vault only to emerge back into the open Wasteland. Instead, Fallout New Vegas puts players in the heart of Vegas which has continued to thrive with fresh water and power thanks to the Hoover Dam. The Tales franchise has been around for years.

This IP throws players into different thrilling narratives, with the latest installment being Tales of Arise. With Tales of Arise, the main focus is stopping a regime. Centered around the narrative are two planets, a medieval world called Dahna and an advanced world called Rena. Fortunately, these characters will help out during combat, just like in past games. In fact, this installment has a brand new feature called Boost Strike, which allows party members to do a series of attacks in unison.

Besides the main campaign, players have a series of planets they could visit which holds different communities to explore and characters to meet. Again, similar to Fallout, there are a ton of side quests you could accept and help which would reward players with in-game currency, XP, or gear. The rest of the big moral choices will be left to you as you progress through the game.

Path of Exile for quite a few fans out there was the go-to free alternative to a Diablo video game experience. The gameplay was essential with an isometric view as you went through the game battling all sorts of hostile forces and a skill tree that was massive allowing players to spend points in unlocking attributes or skills that gave them a buff towards their preferable play style.

When it comes to the storyline, players are tossed onto the island of Wraeclast, a location that has been cursed and holds nothing but criminals kicked off from the nearby island location of Oriath. Here players are going through Wraeclast helping those in need all while defeating hostile creatures that have popped up within the lands. Of course, the storyline gets quite a bit deeper and with the various updates along with expansions, there is a ton of content to go through.

The gameplay is full of quests and puzzles to solve. Not to mention, a swarm of enemies to battle against using your various hack-and-slash-style combat weapons. One of the video game titles that have done incredibly well with fans pleading Square Enix to deliver a remake was Final Fantasy 7, which came out on the original PlayStation console. It took several years before Square Enix finally caved and announced a remake for the PlayStation 4.

The game only released just last year which dropped the turn-based RPG combat that the original title was known for. Instead, we get an action RPG with players freely moving around during combat and being able to deliver a barrage of attacks of dodges.

Unfortunately, this is not the full game as the developers opted to release this game in episodic-style installments. We mentioned Fallout earlier in this list with Fallout New Vegas. However, we also have the latest mainline installment available for players today which is Fallout 4.
