Among racing drivers, there has never been anyone who did not believe that she could make it, she said. But, for that, equal opportunities are needed. If there are sponsors, companies, teams that believe in women, then we can make history," the year-old said. Sponsors in particular seem to have found it difficult to take a chance on a woman because none have been able to prove themselves winners.
This is not due to lack of skill, willingness, fitness or an aversion to risks. Rather it is because there have been no sponsors who have had the courage to believe in a woman and provide her with the budget she and her team need for a successful season. Money makes all the difference, whether it's Formula One or in the junior ranks. If more girls enter the junior ranks, and are promoted accordingly, it will only be a matter of time before another woman makes it into Formula One.
That was 45 years ago. There have been a few female test drivers over recent years but they never came close to a racing. The W-Series, a racing series exclusively for women that started over two years ago, has not changed the situation yet.
It is supposed to ensure that female drivers get more racing practice free of charge, unlike in Formula One, which costs millions.
But though either gender can compete in F1, no female winner of the W-Series has ever made the jump across. There is an obligation for governing body the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile FIA to finally make a clear pathway for female drivers.
Something seemed amiss with the car before it hit the lorry, according to Chris Mann, a BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter who witnessed the accident. She slowed down but then suddenly, inexplicably, accelerated through the crowd and smashed into the side of the truck. Mr Mann's son, Nick, said it was a miracle none of the Marussia mechanics near the lorry was mown down.
De Villota was given a test drive by Renault in August last year when she clocked up just under miles. Miss de Villota, whose father Emilio was a F1 driver in the s, was scheduled to spend two days doing straight-line tests on Duxford's 1,yard runway. She was pulling in for mechanics to inspect the car in the makeshift pit area when it took off and crashed at around 40mph. It has been suggested that the anti-stall mechanism on her car kicked in and propelled her forward.
Miss de Villota remained motionless for around 15 minutes while paramedics treated her. She was seen to move her hands before being transported by air ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge with serious head and facial injuries.
F1 drivers spoke of their shock at hearing news of the crash. Spain's Fernando Alonso said: 'We called the family and hopefully we will know more soon. All my energy with you! Test drivers help the team develop cars without taking part in races. Since Miss de Villota's appointment another woman, Britain's Suzie Wolff, has been given a similar role at rivals Williams. Last night a spokesman said: 'Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing.
Discussing how she compares to male drivers, Miss de Villota has said: 'While I have great respect for them, I do not see an uneven playing field.
Born: January 13, in Madrid, Spain. Brother Emilio De Villota Jnr is also a racing driver. The views expressed in the contents above are those of our users and do not necessarily reflect the views of MailOnline. Argos AO. Privacy Policy Feedback.
